(Jan 1) The Benefits of Reading Your Bible
There is no better commitment to make to start the new year than to make a firm decision to spend more time reading and studying God's Word. Of course, for all of us, making the commitment January 1st is easy; keeping the commitment day after day is where the true challenge begins.
Time spent learning about God's Word is always for our good. The true task, however, is to ensure that we do more than simply casually skim through a daily reading. We must be willing to read, ask questions of the text, seek out answers...in short, we must be willing to dig deeply into Scripture. As has been said, "Raking is easy, but all you get is leaves; digging is hard, but you might find diamonds."
Psalm 19:7-9 shows us the benefits of knowing God's Word. These verses do three things: tells of a description of the words of the Bible, describes the quality of its content, and then tells of its work.
The law of the LORD is perfect, restoring the soul; The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.
The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the LORD are true; they are righteous altogether.
Here is what these three verses show us:
Description Quality/Content Work it does
Law Perfect Revives the soul
Testimony Sure Making wise the simple
Precepts Right Rejoicing the heart
Commandment Pure Enlightening the eyes
Fear Clean Enduring forever
Rules True Righteous altogether
So what will spending time in Bible study do for you? It will revive your soul, make you wise, cause your heart to rejoice, bring enlightenment, and it will endure forever because it is altogether righteous and true. We all need these things in our lives and we all have the answer to where we can find them. Spend time in the Word this year. You will be the better for it!
