(Sept 6) Developing a Heart of Gratitude

"In God we have boasted continually, and we will give thanks to Your name forever." Psalm 44:8

There are two actions mentioned in this verse. The psalmist states that he is 1) boasting in God and 2) giving thanks to His name. I believe there is a significant connection to make between these two things.

As he boasts continually in the Lord, it leads him to give thanks to God. That makes perfect sense. If we are continually speaking of all the Lord has done, how could we do anything other than give thanks? The more we dwell on God's character and actions, the more our hearts will be engulfed in gratitude.

I believe the inverse of this is also true. The more we give thanks to the Lord, the more we will boast in Him. As we express our thankfulness for God's provisions, blessings, and faithfulness, we will undoubtedly want to boast continually in Him.

So, do you struggle with gratitude? If so, spend this day boasting continually in the Lord. Try telling everyone you possibly can all about the things God has done. Make it a point to boast in God all throughout the day. The result? You will find your heart increasingly grateful.

And, do you struggle with boasting in God? If so, try spending more time today just giving thanks. I promise you God has given you far more blessings than you realize. I assure you that He has been infinitely more kind to you than you have noticed. You will find that counting and naming your blessings will lead you to desire to boast continually in the Lord. I encourage you to take a few minutes even now and list ten things for which you are grateful. It will make it much easier to boast in the Lord when your heart is full of gratitude.

So, let us say as the Apostle Paul said in Galatians 6:14, "But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ."
