"The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice." Proverbs 12:15
Aren't we always shocked when we find out we are wrong? After all, our opinion always feels right. Our perspective seems like the proper way to view a situation. Our personal recollection of events and conversations never appear to be lacking.
It doesn't require too much experience on this earth to begin to feel quite confident in yourself. If everyone would just see things our way, we reason, this world would run much more smoothly. "Why can't others simply realize that my viewpoint is right," we quietly wonder.
This line of thinking can tend to make us loners. If we are not careful, we begin to make decisions based on the mistaken notion that we always know best. And worse, we start to get easily frustrated by a spouse, a child, or a co-worker who does not seem to be as easily impressed with our choices.
This proverb is so helpful. When a foolish man makes a foolish decision, he doesn't think he is being foolish. That is precisely the point. It is foolishness to refuse the wise counsel of others.
Was it Abraham Lincoln who famously spoke of an attorney who chooses to argue his own case and said, "He who represents himself has a fool for a client."
So let me encourage you to pray and seek the Scripture. When you are making decisions, never do so without the ultimate guidance that comes from the Holy Spirit and the Word of God.
Then, remember to seek out the advice of wise counselors. Recognize that God has put people in your life for a reason. Listen to those in your office. Ask questions of others in your household and enlist their advice.
Your own way will always seem to be the right way. But, remember, that is also true for a fool. So choose, instead, to show wisdom and listen to others. You will find that our heavenly Father knows best, His word is true, His ways are perfect, and the decisions you make will be better. Meditate on Proverbs 12:15 and put it into action beginning today.
